Josephine Eichenhofer was born in Germany, October 23, 1882, a few hours after her twin sister Veronica (Sister M. Hildegard). Josephine entered at Clyde October 19, 1912, some years after Veronica and Mary (Sister M. Walburga), who was a year younger. Four other sisters followed in time: Sisters M. Willibalda, Leona, Sabina and Eusebia. Josephine was invested July 5, 1913 and professed August 5, 1914 as Sister M. Wunibalda. She made perpetual vows on September 8, 1919, and though she did not live to celebrate her Golden Jubilee, she received Consecration of Virgins on November 16, 1952.
Sister was a cheerful, sacrificial person, with strong faith in God. For many years she helped in the dairy barn and orchard and in caring for the bees -- both at Chewelah (1916—1928) and at Clyde. She was stationed at our Mundelein convent for a number of years, working in the Altar Bread department. During the community retreat there in January, 1954 she became very ill, and within the next few days had a series of severe heart attacks, which brought her life to a close on February 5th, just as the priest was singing the "Ita Missa est" at the end of the Mass offered in honor of the Sacred Heart.
Sister was privileged to receive Holy Communion three times within eighteen hours, and her last audible words were: "0 Salutaris Hostia." She had suffered and offered many prayers and hidden sacrifices for priests (having two in her own family), and it seemed God rewarded her with special graces during her last illness. She was seventy-two years old at the time of her death on Feb. 5, 1954.
