Augusta Niedermeyer was born at Woodbine, Illinois on April 1, 1865. Her father was from Bavaria, her mother from Prussia. Augusta entered on May 31, 1883, was invested on Sept. 14, 1883 and made profession as Sister M. Seraphim on Oct. 28, 1884. Perpetual vows were made on November 21, 1889 and her Golden Jubilee was solemnized in 1933.
Sister was a tiny, delicate person, refined and well educated. For some years she had charge of the Correspondence department and was very exact and exacting in the work. She also served as secretary to Mother M. John for many years.
Confined to the infirmary for some years because of ill health, Sister was sent to Chewelah, Washington in 1919, in the hope that her health might improve. She remained there until 1925. However, she grew extremely frail in later years and was long a resident of the new infirmary. There she received the tender, loving care of Sister M. Pudentiana. Sister loved flowers and from her window on the second floor of the infirmary she gave directions regarding the flower beds below.
Only after years of physical suffering and constant fatigue was it discovered that she had cancer. She bore all with loving patience and resignation, and died on Oct. 20, 1948 at the age of eighty-three years. One of the nearest and dearest of her relatives was Father Patrick Niedermeyer, O.S.B., of Mt. Angel Abbey, Oregon, who came to see her occasionally.
