Margaret Ellen Sapp was born at Milwood, Ohio on September 18, 1872. Both parents were American- born. She entered at Clyde on February 2, 1894, and was invested the following July 11th. On August 24, 1895 she was professed as Sister M. Ildephonse, and made perpetual vows on September 11, 1904. She was a blood sister of Sister M. Alphonsa, seven years her senior.
Sister had a good education, taught in neighboring public schools and later at our own Academy. For many years she had charge of the foreign correspondence, and worked very closely with Father Lukas Etlin, who thought highly of her. She was also responsible for ordering religious articles (rosaries, medals, etc.) from Italy, France and Germany, to be used as premiums in connection with "Tabernacle and Purgatory" and its German counterpart, and also for sale in the order department. Sister was very conscientious in having a sufficient supply on hand and seeing that the articles were blessed before distribution. She also helped with the regular correspondence and acquired many benefactors for the community through her understanding letters.
Sister M. Ildephonse was a kindly person, always gracious and smiling. She suffered from pulmonary ailments for many years and died on September 3d, 1931 at the age of fifty-nine. A few days before her death, the following entry was made in the Clyde chronicle: "Sister M. Ildephonse has been an edification to us all, both in her life of active works for our community and now in her patient suffering and loving acceptance."
