Born in Germany on June 2, 1898, Maria Buehler was one of a large group of postulants who came over from Europe with Sister M. Bernard in August, 1922. She was invested on August 25, 1923, and made profession as Sister M. Magdalen on August 30, 1924.
Sister was a gentle, gracious person, loving and much loved. Outstanding for her charity, she used her many talents generously in the service of God and neighbor. She loved prayer and the Divine service, and for many years her rich, beautiful voice blended with the schola, first at Clyde and then at Mundelein. Her skill at fine needle work was developed and well utilized in the Church Goods department. She also shared the hardships of the old vestry in the attic as assistant to Sister M. Genevieve.
Sister went to Mundelein with the first pioneers in June, 1928 and remained there the rest of her life, with the exception of a short period at Clyde for perpetual vows and two years in Tucson. At Mundelein she had charge of the chapel cleaning and the vigil lights for many years, and the last few years was also procuratrix. She prayed and sacrificed much for the cause of holy priests.
In the course of years Sister's health gradually declined. On November 21, 1965 she collapsed and was hospitalized in intensive care at the Waukegan hospital. The following day she suffered another and more severe stroke and died the evening of November 22, 1965 at the age of sixty-seven years. Though unable to speak, it was apparent that Sister was conscious and followed the prayers to the end. Her remains were brought to Clyde for Burial.
