Verna Fuerer was born in Switzerland May 13, 1862 and as a child attended the same school as Philip Ruggle, the future Abbot of Conception. She entered at Clyde on Dec. 6, 1886, was invested May 5, 1887 and professed on the same date in 1888. Perpetual vows were made on Nov. 21, 1893. She celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 1938.
Though small, Sister was strong and energetic, and took charge of the orchard and vineyard at the orphanage for many years. She was kind and motherly to the children, and they loved her. She was of a very cheerful disposition, thoughtful of others' needs, and always ready to lend a hand. For many years she and Sister M. Nicola were diligent, faithful co-workers in the packing room at the correspondence department at Clyde.
Bronchial trouble and other ailments confined Sister M. Luitgard to the infirmary in later years, but she tried to be helpful to the infirmarians and the patients as long as she could be up and around. Death came on January 9, 1944. Sister was eighty-two years old.
