Christine Wachter was born at Conception, MO., Oct. 30, 1890. Her father died before she entered the convent. Her mother was much opposed to her becoming a religious, but against her wishes Sister entered at Clyde, Oct. 5, 1907 and was invested with the habit the following March. Due to her mother’s insistence, Christine had to leave for a time. But she remained firm in her vocation and finally overcame all obstacles, returned and made her first profession of vows Feb. 19, 1910. She was perpetually professed on Feb. 4, 1917 and received Consecration of Virgins Nov. 16, 1952.
Sister was stationed at the orphanage for several years, teaching the children there, and was much loved by all. She was at our convent in Chewelah, Washington from August 1923 to April 1927. For many years she had charge of the printery at Clyde, and after that of the packing room. An excellent manager, systematic and orderly, she was very good at delegating work to others.
A quiet, dignified person, Sister was always calm and self-possessed. This was especially apparent in her supervision of processions and other ceremonies at Clyde which she did for many years. As Prioress of our Mundelein community from 1954 until her death she was motherly, a firm but kind disciplinarian, and was much loved by the Sisters. She was prayerful, specially devoted to the Sacred Heart, was simple in her tastes and practiced great detachment, retaining nothing superfluous in her use.
From 1955-56 Sister suffered from thyroid cancer which metastasized. Before her final hospital admission, sensing that this would be the end, she turned all responsibility over to her subprioress (Sr. M. Eulalia) leaving everything in perfect order. She died there, after much suffering, on the feast of the Sacred Heart, June 7, 1956.
