2018-19 Education Committee Goals, Objectives & Tasks

Vision of AVP-USA Education Committee : Sustaining the core and guiding the future of AVP training

The Education Committee supports facilitators by developing training materials and providing related resources for facilitators in USA prisons and outside prisons—in communities, schools, and other organizations where training in alternatives to violence and conflict transformation is needed.

Mission Statement

The Mission of the Education Committee is to serve as the “heart” of AVP by assuring continual growth and improvement of AVP training, advising on maintenance of quality assurance for AVP core workshops (i.e., development of manuals, training materials and resources; promotion of continuing learning, and ongoing sharing of experiences and the wisdom of best practice), and participating in a worldwide network of Education Committees.

Goal #1: Develop manuals, materials, and other training resources. Develop and implement processes, guidelines, and evaluation for quality assurance in AVP exercises, agendas, workshops, manuals, and training of facilitators. Promote formal and informal communications and dialogue about best practices in AVP workshop training and materials.

Objective 1.1: Devise various strategies or mechanisms to include facilitators in manual writing and development of new or revised activities and exercises for next round of manuals.

Tasks to Achieve Objective 1.1

1.1a Develop a database that will allow facilitators (national and international) to give feedback, make suggestions for changes, and rewrite activities and exercises electronically for the next round of manuals.

1.1b Develop a database (team drive/google doc) of activities and exercises that have been contributed by AVP facilitators.

1.1c Review, revise existing activities (when necessary), and evaluate contributions from facilitators for the next round of manuals.

1.1d Collaborate with the International Manual Editors Team to write and publish training materials to be used in AVP Workshops nationally and internationally.

1.1e Collaborate with International Education in building databases to capture and share the new material from both the Manual Writers and Manual Editors Teams and facilitators worldwide.

1.1f Build a collaborative in which various teams work together (e.g., the Manual Writers Team, Education Committee, Advanced Topics Team) to write, and/or collect from facilitators, new exercises for manuals.

1.1g Revise and develop new exercises/activities that would be more relevant to contemporary participants, and exercises that have been “overused” with inside facilitators (assure feedback from inside facilitators).

1.1h Collect feedback from facilitators at conferences (e.g., using the world cafe format) about ways to simplify the language and layout of manuals.

1.1i Recognize and accommodate different learning styles in the language and layout of existing manuals to support or accommodate a more diverse population of facilitators and to widen the cohort that is able to facilitate.

1.1j Use multimedia to support participants before or after an AVP workshop. (There are no plans to deliver AVP workshops online or integrate multimedia into workshops at this time, but to enhance the workshops with multimedia/online facilitator training and continuing learning. For example, the Adaptation and Education Committees are planning a series of three facilitator training Webinars this year.)

Objective 1.2: Develop an infrastructure to establish best practices and quality assurance in core AVP workshops.

Tasks to Achieve Objective 1.2

1.2a Develop a standardized approach to evaluating core AVP workshops (e.g., AVP exercises, agenda, and training of facilitators).

1.2b Apply the “Circle of Quality Assurance” that defines and distinguishes core AVP workshops from other types or variations on core AVP workshops.

1.2c Continue to collaborate with International Education in building databases to capture and share the new materials and best practices for both the Manual Writers in the USA and Manual Editors Teams (AVP-I) and facilitators worldwide as a part of building quality assurance in core AVP training.

1.2d Collaborate with International Education’s sponsorship of discussion@avp.international to enable facilitators worldwide to be informed about educational activities and to be able to provide experiences and feedback about facilitation and activities/exercises.

1.2e Plan for continuous review of innovations and changes in workshop materials.

1.2f Revisit issues and policies around balancing our program quality, integrity, partnerships and copyright issues relative to collection and distribution of our manuals and materials.

Goal #2: Knowledge Management Team and Education Committee: Collaborate with Knowledge Management in order to collect and share the wisdom, experiences, and best practices from past and current education programs and make accessible to facilitators.

Objective 2.1 Collect past and present educational material, (including manuals, activities/exercises and workshop agendas, reports and evaluations and other facilitation and educational content, etc.) and make accessible to facilitators

Tasks to Achieve Objective 2.1

2.1a Continue to work with the Knowledge Management Team to make resources available to AVP-USA facilitators.

2.1b Strengthen the established infrastructure with Knowledge Management Team and Communication Committee in order to make Education documents accessible to facilitators.

2.1c Develop Collection Management policies and procedures for collection and storage of Education documents and resources (e.g., format, types of material, length of storage of education materials, and access restrictions).

2.1d Gather a full collection of AVP-USA Education major documents and store them electronically for easy access by facilitators.

2.1e Develop guidelines regarding AVP-USA Education resources that will be given to Swarthmore as part of the archiving agreement.

2.1f Select important resources from the full collection of AVP-USA Education major documents and share electronic copies, and some print copies with Swarthmore as part of the archiving project.

Goal #3: Increase support for inside facilitators and increase their inclusion in the development of AVP training exercises.

Objective 3.1 Increase support for inside facilitators in ways that will empower inmates to exercise more ownership of the curriculum (e.g., developing scenarios that better fit their daily activities and constraints).

Tasks to Achieve Objective 3.1

3.1a Pilot new exercises with inside facilitators to make sure that they are appropriate for various inside groups.

3.1b Set up an Advanced Topics workgroup to connect with prison coordinators (in local and regional groups) who can arrange to present new activities/exercises to inside facilitators for piloting and feedback to Education.

3.1c Collaborate with the Transformer editor to have articles and sections in the Transformer on new exercises.

3.1d Encourage inside facilitators to explore and evaluate new and existing activities/exercises, agendas, and manuals, and provide feedback to Education.

3.1e Collaborate with the AVP-USA fundraiser to raise money for box libraries with manuals and other materials for inside facilitators.

3.1f Collaborate with the Communication Committee to develop a list of manuals suitable for a manual box library and develop a process for local prison coordinators to select from the recommended list of resources from the Distribution Center.

3.1g Write Transformer articles to inform inside facilitators about the work of Education.

Objective 3.2 Arrange to have the Education training material translated into Spanish.

Tasks to Achieve Objective 3.2

3.2a Set up an Advanced Topics Workgroup to connect with prison coordinators (in local and regional groups) who can arrange to present new activities/exercises to inside facilitators for piloting and feedback to Education.

3.2b Increase the percentage of prisons with AVP programs that receive copies of the Transformer in both English and Spanish.

3.2c Arrange to have the “Light and Lively” Supplement and “Best Practice” booklet (and other “best practice” and education products) translated into Spanish.

3.2d Make these Spanish translations available to inside facilitators.

Goal #4: Develop better support structures for new facilitators and to keep outside facilitators informed and engaged.

Objective 4.1 Set up an infrastructure for more direct support for apprentice facilitators.

Tasks to Achieve Objective 4.1

4.1a Inform new facilitators about the structure, materials, manuals, and services in AVP-USA related to Education; list those services that are specifically Education Committee support materials (Include related International Education materials and services).

4.1b Plan and present to AVP-USA Board mechanisms to make new facilitators aware they are part of something bigger than their local work.

4.1c Prepare a welcome letter for new facilitators (with USA-AVP Board approval) outlining AVP-USA services, the National Gatherings, free first year Transformer subscription, email lists, websites, google teams, scholarships, committee opportunities, AVP International, etc.

4.1d Continue to collaborate with Communication Committee to add welcome information from Education to new facilitators.

4.1e Include a “welcome section” in the revised Basic Manual and the Facilitators Training Manual.
