1.1 The mission of the Education Department at Santa Clara University is to educate compassionate, competent professionals who are committed to meaningful and supportive engagement with people, schools, and communities. Our programs are focused on academic excellence and comprehensive preparation of future teachers and school leaders who will attend thoughtfully to the academic and personal needs of all students and their communities. The Preliminary Multiple Subject and Single Subject Teaching Credential programs comprise our largest group of credential candidates. Our credential candidates’ field placements vary: most are placed in public schools; some are placed in charter schools; and others are full-time teachers of record in Catholic schools.

The Department of Education offers a program for multiple and single subject candidates who are teaching in private and/or Catholic school settings for 3 years of full time teaching. The majority of students in this pathway are part of the Excellence in Catholic Education and Leadership (ExCEL) program. ExCEL in an innovative program that creates pathways for outstanding individuals to teach in K-12 Catholic schools, while earning a Master of Arts in Teaching and fulfilling the requirements for a Preliminary Multiple Subject or Single Subject Teaching credential. The program is a partnership between the Department of Education, the Diocese of San Jose, and The Sobrato Family Foundation.

Private school or Catholic school educators may complete the appropriate multiple or single single subject program coursework followed by all MATTC students. In lieu of student teaching, candidates must complete three years of full-time teaching in the subject area(s) authorized by the Preliminary credential the candidate is seeking. Candidates must also meet the requirements as listed in the CTC document CL-834.
