Gerrit Olivier studied music at the University of Pretoria. An overseas scholarship from the British Council allowed him to study as a répétiteur and conductor at the London Opera Centre in 1976-77. At the same time he received tuition in piano accompaniment from Geoffrey Parsons, and performed at Parsons' master classes in the South Bank Summer Music Festival in London.

DR. GERRIT OLIVIER, 'n musikoloog, koniponis en orrelis verbonde aan die konservatorium van die Universiteit van Pretoria (UP), word vanaand deur die Suid_Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns vereer vir sy bydrge tot die Afrikaanse psalm-en-gesangeboek.
"Ek het agt nuwe melodieë vir die Liedboek geskryf en ook baie harmonisasies gedoen vir die begeleidingsboek," het Olivier gesê. Hy is in sy skik met die erkenning van die Akademie, maar meer omdat dit kerkmusiek is wat op dié manier erkenning geniet.
Hy is opgelei in die UP se musiekfakulteit, waar hy die grade B.Mus. en M.Mus. verwerf het, asook 'n diploma in kerkmusiek. In Pretoria is hy al 30 jaar betrokke by kerkmusiek, en hy is nou die orrelis van die NG gemeente Waterkloof
Olivier het al heelparty komposisies die lig laat sien, waaronder 'n liedsiklus deur die SAUK aangevra vir die Totius-gedenkfees in 1977, 'n concerto vir orrel en orkes wat in 1990 deur sy kollega Wim Vilioen saam met die UP-simfonieorkes uitgevoer is, 'n Requiem vir soliste, koor en orrel, 'n orrelsonate asook kamermusiek, orrel-solostukke en koorwerke.
Hy het in die laat 1970's aan die Londense Operasentrum gestudeer en kursusse as repetiteur en dirigent voltooi. Hy het tegelyk klasse in klavierbegeleiding van Geoffrey Parsons ontvang.
OLIVIER, Gerrit Cornelius

Gerrit Olivier studied music at the University of Pretoria. An overseas scholarship from the British Council allowed him to study as a répétiteur and conductor at the London Opera Centre in 1976-77. At the same time he received tuition in piano accompaniment from Geoffrey Parsons, and performed at Parsons' master classes in the South Bank Summer Music Festival in London.
Olivier subsequently appeared as accompanist and répétiteur for the Regional Councils for the Performing Arts of Natal and the Free State and for numerous prominent singers and choirs. He is also active in the field of church music and has been organist in various parishes of the Dutch Reformed Church for more than 40 years. At present he is organist for the Waterkloof parish in Pretoria. Olivier serves on the executive committee of the South African Church Organists' Association (SAKOV).
Furthermore he was a member of the Interdenominational Commission responsible for revising the Afrikaans Psalm Book and the Afrikaans Hymnal, which were published in 2002. Apart from contributing ten new melodies, he also harmonized more than 40 psalms and hymns. Gerrit Olivier is the author of several articles on church music and South African Art Music.
