The National Ukrainian University

The National Ukrainian University named after Shevchenko, the famous Ukrainian poet and painter is in the centre of the capital. It was founded in 1834. Many famous people graduated from it in different times.

Just opposite the famous red building of the University there is a fine park, well know to the Kvivites. In the centre of the park there is a nice monument to T. G. Shevchenko.

The Mariinskyi Palace

The Mariinskyi Palace is a Tzar is t palace, a monument of architecture. It was built in the middle of the 13* century for Empress Elizabeth I. It was destroyed by fire in 1819, and ashes rebuilt in 1870 for the visit of Emperor Oleksandr II and Empress Maria Oleksandrivna (hence the name of the palace). During the World War II it was destroyed and rebuilt again after the war.

It stands above the river in the Pechers’k district near the building of the Supreme Rada. The Mariinskyi Palace is the official residence of the President of Ukraine. President Inaugurations take place there. In front of the palace there is one of the oldest and most attractive parks of the city.

St. Sophia’s Cathedra!

Another ancient monument is St Sophia’s Cathedral. It was founded in 1037 under the reien of Yaroslav the Wise, in honour of the victors' over the Pechenigs. It was named after Saint Sophia - “wisdom” in Greek. It became a cultural and political centre of the state. Foreign embassadors were met in the cathedral. In front of it people got together to discuss the main problems. It was there that Yaroslav the Wise organized the first Library. The sight is decorated with mosaics and frescoes. There is also a portrait of Yaroslav’s family, with his wife Irene, son Volodymyr and Olga. Here you can see the tomb of Yaroslav the Wise. Opposite the Cathedral there is a monument to Bohdan Khmelnytsky, an outstanding Hetman of Ukraine.

The monument to three brothers: Kvi. Shchek and Khoriv and their sister Lybid

There is a legend that they founded Kyiv. Once there were three brothers Kyi, Shchek and Khoriv, and they had a young sister who was called Lybid. They founded a town on one of the hills, above the Dniper ^{WIDSS KpHJia} and called it Kyiv after the oldest brother. And in honour of the younger brothers one hill was named Shchekavytsya, and another - Khorevytsya, while ihe river was called Lybid after their sister.

The monument looks like a big boat. The brothers are strong and tall. And Lybid’s arms are like two wings. And the Dniper is near the boat.

Khreshchatyk

The main street in Kyiv is Khreshchatyk which looks like a park lane: it is a river of green and gold trees from early spring till late autumn. It has tall, light - coloured buildings. Although it is only one and a half kilometres long, it is extremely wide - 54 metres. The architectural effect is intensified by the leafy chestnut trees lining the street

During the war Khreshchatyk was completely destroyed and it was rebuilt in the post - war years. There are many places of interest in Khreshchatyk. They are: the Ukrainian house, the Museum of Ukrainian Fine Arts. National Parliamentary Library of Ukraine, the Palace of Culture. In Khreshchatyk Street there is the Tchaikovsky State Conservatoire. Ivan Franko Drama Theatre, Dnipro hotel. There are many shops and a big market there, there are also many fountains and cinemas there.

The beautiful street is the people’s favourite place for public holidays.

The Supreme Rada

The building of Ukrainian parliament, Verhovna Rada, was erected in 1936 -1938. The parks surrounding the building of the Supreme Rada provide a pleasant setting.

The ceiling of the conference hall is a huge glass dome, from which the State flag of Ukraine flies. The main enterance is in a form of a three - storey portico.

The interior is decorated with marble, different kinds of valuable wood, sculptural work and bronze ornaments. Opposite the building (of the Supreme Rada) there is the building of the Counsil of Ministers of Ukraine, one of the largest buildings in Kyiv.

The Kyiv - Pecherskyi Monastery

The Kvivites may be proud of Kyivo - Pecherska Lavra (Monastery) which stands on the green hill above the Dniper. It’s sparkling gold cnpolas can be seen from outside the city. That Orthodox monastery was founded about 1051 by Antonii' Pecherski in the caves near lapiv, where monks lived. It occupies a huge territory. The highest hill is the site of the Higher Monastery (Lavra).

In the 11th century the monastery became the centre of Christianity.

During the 11 - 12 centuries many churches were built on the territory of Lavra. There was the centre of icon - painting. Many princes donated their money to the monastery. Many famous chroniclers, writers, scientists, painters and doctors lived there.

Eveiy day many people came there to get acquinted with past and present at Ukraine.

The Golden Gate

The Golden Gate was the main entrance to the city. Old Kyiv had two main parts: the Upper Town and the Lower Town (Podol). There were four gates in the walls. Now you can see only the Golden Gate built in 1037 together with the St. Sophia’s Cathedral. The Golden Gate is 7,5 metres wide. Not long ago (in 1981-1982) it was restored. Tourists usually begin their tour of Kyiv from here. From the top of the Gates you can admire a splendid view of the city.
