NSWCCC Bar Award for Excellence in Softball
Joel Byrne has had an extraordinary year in softball, exemplifying excellence, leadership, and resilience at every level of competition. A consistent performer for the New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges team since 2020, Joel’s skill and determination have seen him evolve from a promising rookie into a key team leader. In 2024, Joel captained the NSW Schools team to victory, pitching a nail-biting Grand Final that resulted in a 5-4 walk-off win over Queensland. His ability to stay calm and deliver under immense pressure has earned him the respect of both teammates and opponents alike.
As a pitcher, Joel’s blazing fastball and pinpoint accuracy have been instrumental in shutting down opposing lineups, while his power and consistency at the plate make him an invaluable dual threat. His standout performances this year culminated in his selection for the Australian All Schools Merit Team, being named NSW Most Valuable Player, and the honour of being a Flag Bearer at the Combined School Sport Australia Games. These accolades are a testament to Joel’s extraordinary talent, commitment, and impact on the sport.
Joel’s dedication extends beyond his achievements in softball. He is also an integral member of his school’s First Grade Rugby League team, while maintaining a strong focus on his academic pursuits. Joel’s work ethic, maturity, and willingness to assist others have made him a role model within his school community and among his peers.
Joel’s sustained excellence, leadership, and humility, along with his remarkable achievements on the national and international stage—including representing Australia in Mexico in 2023 and contributing to the U23 NSW team’s success—make him a truly deserving recipient of the New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges Blue Award for Softball in 2024.
