Barnard is a small, urban, resource-rich school with many opportunities. The sister school of Columbia, located right across the street, Barnard students have full access to their facilities and courses. That being said, Barnard is not a good fit for a woman who just wants to be at Columbia. They have a tight-knit community with an ambitious, intelligent student body and engaging professors. Definitely a challenging, somewhat stressful academic environment, classes are a mix of lectures and discussion. To balance that challenge, NYC guarantees there's always something to do, with plenty of on-campus events, and a big party scene and Greek presence.
Popular majors / known for: psychology, English, economics
Academic approach: liberal arts, with a 3-2 engineering program and 50 fields for majors
Fun fact / campus tradition: Big Sub: 700+ foot long sandwich that is assembled across Barnard’s campus. Tradition takes place once a year and is the annual free sandwich giveaway. It’s assembled by the students and faculty that takes hours long to put together and is usually consumed by students within 10 minutes.
What sets Barnard apart
Partners closely with Columbia, with access to 1500+ courses, 20 libraries, 450 organizations and DI athletics. Big party scene and Greek life, very resource rich and tight-knit community. Engaging professors and an ambitious, intelligent student body.
Not a fit for someone who just wants to be at Columbia.
