Allegheny is a small liberal arts school located in rural northwestern PA. Their curriculum is fairly flexible; students can mix and match majors/minors from different disciplines. During their last year, all students have to take on an independent research project with oversight from professors. Professors are invested in students and teach their own classes. Despite being a small, rural school, they are known to "study like an Ivy, party like a state school," so you get two sides of the college experience. Students are heavily engaged in community service, and must live on campus all four years.

Popular majors / known for: Psychology, Biology, Economics, Neuroscience, Speech and Communication and Rhetoric

Academic approach: Liberal arts; stresses interdisciplinary and academic focus, curiosity and diverse interests

Campus tradition: Gator Activities Programming (GAP) hosts Wingfest in September. More than 4,000 chicken wings from local establishments are served, and vegan options are also available. Students line up early to receive a free Wingfest t-shirt while listening to rockin’ tunes, and student teams register in advance to participate in a wing-eating contest. Everyone is welcome to join the costumed chicken—in the chicken dance, of course—for the chance to win additional prizes.
