Rochester is a school of endless opportunities, including research, advanced classes, and study abroad. They have an open curriculum without general education requirements, allowing students to pursue multiple academic interests. They encourage hands-on learning, and over three-quarters of undergraduates participate in research! Classes require a LOT of work, and studying tends to preoccupy the study body, but professors are incredible and you’ll receive a quality education. With an active social scene including clubs and Greek life, for a medium-sized school, U Rochester has a big-school feel.

Music and Performing Arts Opportunities

  • University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music has been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) since 1928. NASM accreditation ensures that schools are meeting national standards for music schools.

  • Eastman is one of the top conservatories in the US, is very competitive, and offers Bachelor of Music degrees in a variety of areas including performance, composition, jazz studies, and education.

  • The Arthur Satz Department of Music at the school of arts and sciences offers BA degrees in various tracks that offer flexibility for students to double major or pursue pre-med or pre-law tracks. Students in the school of arts and sciences do not have to undergo the same rigorous audition process as Eastman students, but have access to Eastman’s resources and can even audition to take lessons at Eastman.

  • Sibley Music Library at Eastman is the largest music library in the country that is associated with a college or university.
