Schools with Religious Class Requirements

Below is a list of faith-based CollegePoint schools, separated by Catholic vs. Protestant denominations, with required faith-based activities or classes. A key is included below:

    • Not emphasized - Religion/Theology classes are required. (Note: these requirements are NOT necessarily Christian theology classes. This list includes schools with a theology requirement that can be satisfied by a philosophy class, etc.) Impact of religious life on overall student body is not a concern.

    • Emphasized - Required faith-based classes and activities impact overall campus culture. Do diligent research on religious life to confirm social fit before deciding on these schools.

    • Heavily Emphasized - Required faith-based classes, activities, and policies dominate campus culture. Interested students can apply, but should be aware of the policies and impact on campus life.

Catholic Schools with Emphasized Faith

Providence College - The school is religiously monitored and advised by over forty Dominican Friars living nearby and alongside students in the dorms. 65% of student self-identify as Catholic. The school’s website states, “the Dominican tradition of quality teaching and scholarship actively cultivates intellectual, spiritual, ethical and aesthetic values within the Judeo-Christian heritage.”

Saint Vincent College - Weekend mass and other campus ministry events are the most prominent social events happening on campus. Residential halls are broken into pods that support one another through bible study and prayer sessions. They have 6 campus ministry missions a year for students to choose from. Students boast about how relationships with the local Benedictine monks is just as important as relationships with professors.

University of Dallas - University of Dallas boasts itself as a faith-based school whose Catholic faith “illuminates every aspect of life at UD, from social activities to clubs and organizations.” 75% of student self-identify as Catholic. Youth groups like Crusaders for Life are large on campus.

Catholic Schools with Heavily Emphasized Faith

Franciscan University of Steubenville - As recently as 2012, Franciscan University has adopted academic and student life policies that are homophobic and anti-inclusive in nature. In Social Work courses, Franciscan explored homosexuality as deviant behavior. The Human Life Studies minor explores topics like homosexuality and gender nonconformity as signs of cultural decay and collapse. Their student life office’s primary mission is to, “Promote the moral, spiritual, and religious values of our students and the integration of Christian faith and right reason into their daily lives.” Franciscan encourages students to take the knowledge they gain beyond campus, “so that they might spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.” The school’s detailed mission (found here: https://www.franciscan.edu/about/mission/) emphasizes evangelization of students.

*IMPORTANT NOTE: The Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) is an education association that has strict membership requirements. Schools must be christian universities where all full-time staff and administration are professed Christians. Schools must also adopt policies and advocate for specific Christian ideals. Schools must advocate “a required belief in God as Earth's creator (and a sustainability mandate), marriage as between a man and a woman, the worth of every human being, and the need for racial reconciliation.”

Protestant Schools with Emphasized Faith

Calvin College - Calvin College is a strongly christian-oriented college that emphasizes a faith-based education. They are a member of the CCCU (See Notes), but do not abide to all policies put forth by the CCCU. Most notably, the Calvin College handbook includes non-discriminatory language toward non-heterosexual and trans individuals. Chapel is held daily from 10-Noon, with most students choosing to participate. Students meet weekly in dorm groups to discuss faith. Although many faith based activities are not required, most students opt in. Non-evangelical students will not fit in here.

Goshen College - Member of the CCCU until they adopted a hiring policy allowing homosexual staff and administration. The school is still entirely devoted to providing a Mennonite education, but they have adopted a more progressive outlook than other evangelical schools. The students are often involved in faith-based service and community programs. Students must attend 12 chapel and convocation events a semester (about once a week).

Seattle Pacific University - SPU emphasizes placing faith in classroom, regardless of religious affiliation. All students will graduate with an understanding of the bible, christianity, and theology alongside their respective major. They ensure that students understand topics through a Judeo-Christian lens. Three weekly faith-based events are well attended by students. Although none are required, many students opt-in to the larger two events: Chapel (traditional morning worship service) and Group (contemporary night worship service).

Protestant Schools with Heavily Emphasized Faith

Bethel University - Member of the CCCU since 1976.

Biola University - Member of the CCCU since 1976.

Brigham Young University - BYU enforces strict doctrine of the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormon doctrine) into its educational policies. Therefore, students are expected to be drug free (including caffeine), chaste, regular participants in church services (can be non-denominational), and encourage others to follow the same creed. Students who fall out of good religious standing may go through a review process to determine next steps. Next steps can include probation, suspension, or expulsion. BYU is a school steeped in Mormon tradition, and therefore should only be recommended to student who are actively participating in the church.

Cedarville University - Cedarville left the CCCU in 2015 when the CCCU considered allowing member schools to hire openly homosexual faculty and staff. Goshen College, a CCCU member at the time, adopted an inclusive hiring policy during the 2014/15 school year. Goshen was removed from the CCCU by vote in September 2015 for their policy. Shortly after, Cedarville left the CCCU, claiming that Goshen’s removal was not swift enough.

Gordon College - Member of the CCCU since 1976.

Houghton College - Member of the CCCU since 1976.

Messiah College - Member of the CCCU since 1976.

Point Loma Nazarene University - Member of the CCCU since 1979.

Taylor University - Member of the CCCU since 1976.

Westmont College - Member of the CCCU since 1976.

Wheaton College (IL) - Member of the CCCU since 1976.
