U Miami boasts a gorgeous campus, with an incredible range of courses including great programs in the sciences, engineering, and music. Classes are challenging, but rewarding, and professors are approachable and knowledgeable. Their academic diversity is paired with cultural diversity. Students tend to be active and sporty, but Greek life has a big presence. Sports are HUGE, so you’d definitely have that “college football” experience.
Popular majors / known for: Biology, Communications, Journalism, Business, Pre-Health/Nursing, Engineering
Academic approach: Research University
Campus tradition: Before Homecoming there is a big boat burning ceremony with fireworks. Everyone gathers around the lake as a boat is lit on fire and they wait in anticipation. It’s said that if the mast of the boat falls before the boat sinks, then the Hurricanes will win the Homecoming game.
Fun fact: In February, there is an all-weekend Olympics called SportsFest where students join teams (your residential floor if you’re a freshman), and they compete in fun events including Wii Sports, flag football, and cornhole, among others. There’s something for everyone! Though it’s a competitive atmosphere, SportsFest is intended to foster community and pride in UM.
