Music and Performing Arts

These are schools that have strong music or performing arts programs! Some require you to apply to a separate school of music, which sometimes have different application deadlines and often require an audition and/or a portfolio. There are three types of music/performing arts majors: Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), and Bachelor of Music (BM). BA music degrees are typical liberal arts degrees where you major in music and often do not require an audition. BM degrees are focused on music with only a few non-music courses required. BM programs are offered by conservatories, and an audition weighs heavily in the admissions decision. BFA programs are the equivalent to BM programs in their focus on the arts, but they offer degrees in theater and visual arts. An audition is usually required for theater majors, and visual art majors should submit an art portfolio with their application. If you are considering a BFA or a BM program, be sure to talk to your coach more in depth about what makes a balanced list, as these programs can be particularly competitive.
