Duck Stamp
9 x 12 In
Gouache and Acrylic
This piece is my duck stamp. This is my fourth time doing this project, and my favorite version. I created this for the duck stamp competition and based the ducks on the Northern Pintail duck. I decided I wanted to feature the unique feathers on the birds' wings so I decided to have one flying in the sky with its wings spread. I then added two ducklings in the water to show other versions of this type of duck. Northern Pintails breed in seasonal wetlands, open areas with short vegetation, wet meadows, grasslands, and crop fields. During the nonbreeding season they use flooded and dry agricultural fields, lakes, reservoirs, estuaries, saltmarshes, freshwater and brackish wetlands, and bays. Because of this I decided to make the ducks in a vast wetland in the piece.
I created this piece with gouache and acrylic. I started with the background and water and then did the ducks. The final step in the creating process was working on the water and adding shadows and hilights.
My piece ended up being a little bit more stylistic and less realistic than I had imagined but I actually like the look of the bold colors on the blue background.
