Figure Drawings

Figure Drawings

Graphite

11x14 in

These drawings were all created as figure drawings, made in real life while looking at real people. The drawings were done under a time limit and are meant to be more "sketch" like, focused on capturing the real shapes and lines of the people's bodies. I made this work focusing on each individual drawing rather than choosing to make all the people in the same style or making them all look cohesive on the paper.

This work was made completely in graphite and as I drew I used fine stroke lines on each part of the body, beginning with the most prominent part of the person's body, such as their spine or their torso. I wasn't focused on trying to make specific details but instead just getting an accurate representation of their body. I think I could use a lot more practice with this skill to strengthen my ability to draw figures.

When I made this drawing I saw myself improving as I drew, I began with the biggest figure and I think it is also the weakest one on the paper. I also found that I had an easier time drawing people sitting than when they were standing up, I think this may be because I could use the chair to help keep the body parts proportional. I also definitely experimented a bit with this project because I haven't done this before, trying to draw a figure in real time looking at the person and I switched up the style some of the people were drawn in as well.
