Duck Stamp

Duck Stamp

Colored Pencil

9 x 12 In

This is my duck stamp project made for the Maine duck stamp competition. I decided to draw the Cinnamon Teal duck because I think the coloring is really beautiful and I thought trying to capture the colors in the feathers would be a good challenge. I also love the color red and I love making art with red so I just really liked the idea of drawing this type of bird.

I made this work first by making a sketch, shown in my idea generation and I then drew the environment, rocks with greenery growing out of them, and then started on the duck and lastly did the sky. I made this work completely out of colored pencils and I'm glad I chose this medium because it made the shading easy.

I wish I had done the legs of the duck before I did the rocks they are on because I couldn't get the orange to go over the gray I had already put down. I also wish I had chosen different paper but I thought I was going to use acrylic paint instead of colored pencil so I chose a thick and bumpy paper. This made it hard to get the colored pencil to lay down well and you can see the paper behind it. I am happy with the way the colors and feathers turned out though. This piece was supposed to have two ducks on it but I had to take out the one flying behind this one due to lack of time so if I had the time to go back and improve upon this piece I would definitely add the other duck like in my sketch.
