Pumpkins
Oil Pastel, graphite, white and black pens
13 x 10 in
This is my observation drawing of three small pumpkins. I've been feeling very fallish today, trying to get into the spirit and I'm glad I could incorporate into my work. I wanted to use lots of shading for this project and colors to help show they are unripe new pumpkins. I chose to make pumpkins, not only because I wanted to make fall themed are but also because I think all their indents and lines are very interesting.
My work was started with graphite for a sketch but after doing so I filled the pumpkins with oil pastels and went over a couple details with a white and black pen, parts like the stickers shown stuck on the side of the pumpkins. My strategy for going about blending the oil pastels was to just go in with a coat of the lighter color then going over that in the spots that needed to be shaded with a darker shade. I also went in with a black oil pastel to shade below the pumpkins and I think this is one of my favorite parts of the piece.
Something I struggled with was texture, there are weird lines indented in the paper from the last project I did and when I was layering the oil pastels they started balling up and when I tried to wipe them away it would smudge the lines and they got sort of blurred. My project evolved a lot because I actually didn't originally plan to add color to this but I am glad I did. If I were to go back to the project I would probably go back in on the background and I wish I made the shading more gray so I could make the background black.
