Faces
Water color, fine sharpie, felt tip marker
9 x 7.25 in
This is my extended blind contour project, for this project I looked at my hand and my face while drawing without looking at the paper. After doing this a few times I colored in each one with felt tip markers and used fine tip markers to fill in some of the details that were different colors. I then moved on to the background and used water color in an inconsistent color to create a messy look that matched that of the drawings. After both these steps I was feeling lost about what to do next but I decided adding structured and bold lines in a pattern to contrast the messy lines. To add more patterns I added 3 stripes of shapes but decided to stop with only doing 3 because I liked to look it gave. This project relates to my life because I drew my hands and my face on the paper and I think it is interesting the way some parts came out out differently.
For this project I went straight in with a thin sharpie to draw the faces and hands to make bold and confident lines which I couldn't change after placing the pen down on the paper. So after creating these bold lines, I went in with fine markers on the details of the drawn marks then with felt tip markers to color in the skin tones. After doing this I went in with my water color in a light wash for the background and lastly I went in with patterns with a fine sharpie to create patterns to contrast the original marks.
On this project I was very focused on using contrast and pattern in an effective way. In order to do this I experimented with color, lines, and shapes trying to create a piece that flowed and was thought provoking. My project evolved a lot especially from when I did the water color to when I drew the fine sharpie lines in the background of the piece, before I drew these lines the piece seemed very disconnected and unfinished. If I were to go back and work more on the piece I'm not sure if I could do anything else that would improve it.
