84 color painting

In this assignment, our task was to make a drawing, and paint it using 84 different colors. This included tints and shades. So, for my picture a drew a hand erupting from the ground, with both the flat lands and the dense city surrounding it. Above it, a brain floats, and three large tentacles are coming down towards the brain. In this project, I used a variety of different colors, I used many different paint brush sizes and tools, and I used a pretty big sized piece of canvas paper.

In this piece, I used many different elements of art and principles of design. For elements, I used color, value and shape. For my principles of design, I used unity, emphasis, and balance. I used color throughout the whole piece, and used 84 different ones. For value, I used different tints and shades and blended them together to make a more flowing piece. And, I used shape for most of the objects seen, such as the brain and the buildings below. I used balance while choosing which color goes where, so the piece didn't look to crammed or messy. I also used emphasis and unity. Unity to make the colors flow nicely, and make sure there weren't too many empty spaces, or spaces that looked out of place. Emphasis was on the brain, because it was bright colors and it lies in the center of the page. It is also one of the biggest objects on the piece. My project changed throughout the drafting process. My original idea didn't have any buildings or landscape, and had more flowers. Along with this, there was also only one big tentacle which came down from the top of the page. This was later changed to add more variety to my project.

There isn't any real meaning behind this piece, I just had an idea. It doesn't relate to my life, but now i'm better with paints. What I am proudest of in this project is how the bottom half of the piece came out, specifically the buildings and landscape. They stand out well and add unity to the piece, which I really enjoy. The main thing I struggled with on this project was time. I spent a lot of time mixing paints and not actually painting, which resulted in it taking way longer than it should have. If I could go back and change something, I would change the middle sky section, because it looks rushed and not very good.
