In this project, we were asked to create a piece around a large ink splotch that was already on the page. There were no restrictions, other than to incorporate this ink splotch into the piece. So, I looked at what I had been given, and realized it looked like a fireball, so I created a dragon breathing fire, and this ink splotch. This project was very fun, as I got to make something I really like, and on top of that I it incorporated the ink splotch really well in my opinion. I did this project with graphite and the paper given. Throughout this piece, I used elements and principles of art such as space, texture, form, emphasis, and movement. I used space when doing the background, and attempting to make it so the dragon didn't take up too much room, as it would make the piece look cluttered. Texture is incredibly important on a dragon, as there are tons of different kinds. So, I went for a mixture of scales and a softer, fur like texture. When drawing creatures, just like humans, I start with the form, and draw out how I want the dragon to look. I ended on this design, starting with the head and going down. Emphasis of course was on the ink splotch, and movement was to make the dragon look more fluid, and like it was actually blowing fire. Originally, I saw something completely different with the ink splotch, and I was planning on something totally different. But, as I began to draw, I realized I didn't really like the idea, so I scrapped it for the dragon idea. If I were to continue working on this piece, I would change a lot. First, I would give the dragon wings, along with visible legs. I would also ink the entire piece, and completely redo the scales on the dragon, as they look really lazy.
