Why I don’t weed my garden?
1. Weeds germinate when exposed to sun. I use two techniques to keep them down. The first is no dig. The second is mulching.
2. No dig at my garden strictly means that. I don’t disturb the soil. The soil is topped with compost, and all nutrition applied as liquids or as layers in the top. I don’t dig. Ever.
3. The soil is mulched and cleared as per the season. By end March the soil is cleared to warm up. By mid May, it is mucked again with crushed dry leaves. In the fall, fresh leaves are cleared. Old crushed leaves remain. In winter they are completely covered with a thick layer of leaves.
4. I don’t uproot plants. They are just clipped at ground level when done. The roots decompose with time.
5. When I harvest radishes, turmeric and carrots, if I do t sow anything immediately, weeds come from the turned soil. I pick them off early.
6. A few weeds still manage to turn up, here and there. They are removed as I see them. Easy to pull out as soil is fluffy.
You can achieve this too, easily. Earmark you’re beds. Dont walk in them. Pull out the weeds now. Allow soil to warm up. And begin mulching in May and persist. Do not till or uproot. Next Spring you will have no weeds. Do give it a shot.
