In all our garden designs, we leave spaces around the house. We also do not spread wood chips beyond the termite mark areas around the house.
I learnt to use woodchips from an American neighbor here. He is an urban gardener of 20 years and orders woodchips every other year for his yard. He told me the following:
A. Termites will enter a home if a bridge is provided. Make sure you have nothing in wood, including patio pillars that touch the ground.
2. There are many types of termites what work on wood. The ones that can attack the house are workers on bone dry wood. Woodchips are always moist and wet and won’t house these.
I am not an authority on the topic. Just sharing what I have heard.
In the many gardens I have worked with since 2016, we have used woodchips extensively to convert lawns to gardens. We almost never later the chips to the wall of the house, but leave a gap of at least 3 feet.
Pls make whatever decisions you believe are good for your house and your gardens. Kindly do not use woodchips if you do not wish to.
