What are we sowing today, Aug 1, 2019?
The priority as we begin fall crops are those that will mature before the winter so that we can get a full harvest before frost.
But not all of them will germinate at high summer temperatures. We are now ranging 90-70. We choose seeds that take this temp.
Beets, Kohl rabi green and purple, radish, cabbage, chard, cauliflower, and Turnip.
We sow them in trays and place them in a cool shaded area, preferably isolated in the patio so no insects get to them.
The seeds should stay moist and will need a spray of water every day. Sometimes twice a day.
We will sow some of the seeds like radish progressively, so we get a continuous harvest. I sow about 10 seeds every week, until end October. Radish does not overwinter.
Cabbage and cauliflower I am sowing early varieties to try and get a winter harvest. I will the sow overwintering types in another month.
Will soon post a video on sowing in seedling trays.
