Water soluble calcium for Plants
When you grow in acidic soils like those in Atlanta, your plants may find it difficult to absorb calcium. You can have leaf curls, bottom end rot, flower drop or slow growth.
Eggs shells are a great source of calcium. Adding crushed egg shells will help your soil. You can also add egg shells to compost and VC bins.
Egg shells take a long time to decompose and may not be immediately available to your plants.
A simpler method is to crush roughly and toast the egg shells until they are dark brown. Then add vinegar. 1:10. Cover with kitchen towel, keep to seep well for 10 days.
The solution will bubble vigorously as the carbon in the calcium carbonate of the shells will dissipate. The calcium will be incorporated into the vinegar, which will neutralize in reaction with the acidic medium.
In 10 days you will have a nice liquid, stable and storable for as long as you wish. Decant the liquid, throw the egg shells into compost.
Apply in a ratio of 8ml per gallon. As foliar spray. The calcium is bioavailable in this form and your fruiting plants like tomatoes and chillies will be quite delighted.
