Notes on curry leaf pruning
Uma Sashikanth
Curry leaf plants will branch out and grow into a lush and thick bush, if pruned. Pruning is essential to the health of the plant.
You prune in two ways. One, while harvesting always pinch off the tips. Don’t pluck a stem, or worse the leaves alone.
Two, you prune the plant completely at the start of the warm season.
Those pictures show what I have done. The first V shaped branch is the mark. Prune a foot above it to allow for multiple nodes.
Notice how a new branch has emerged from each one of those nodes. The branches will grow full of leaves and you will have a bushy plant.
Don’t aim for thin and tall. You won’t get enough leaves. Aim for short and bushy and lot of branches.
I also add a potion to the plant once the leaves begin to come up. See blog for it.
Very diluted buttermilk, sea weed, hing and a handful of compost. Left sitting for 2-3 days. Helps the plant. I add this once. Every summer.
Rice wash also helps the plant. Once a week, not every day.
