As you walk through the rain drenched garden, check if water has drained off.

The rain will nourish the garden as long as it can soak in, and drain. Water clogged areas need special attention.

If your top soil as compacted, it lacks organic matter. Add a layer of compost. Compost holds ten times more water than soil.

Do green manuring. This summer mulch well and allow the crushed leaves to decompose and merge in. More the organic matter in your soil, better its water holding ability.

If your top soil is eroded, you have to channel the water that flows into your garden. All rain water can be channelized with drains, swales and streams, unless your yard lies on a river.

Walking the yard after rain will tell you how well your garden is designed to make most of precious rain water.
