Signs of too much nitrogen

Adding too much fertilizer is a problem that leads to too much nitrogen at the plant. That can not only cause less flowers and more foliage, but also get sucking pests. I am putting out an example from my garden.

I do not use any synthetic fertilizer. Only home made compost. However, relatively poorer soil is good for yield as you will see.

Two nasturtiums. Both wintersown. Both transplanted on the same day. One in a bed that is just being developed from hard clay soil using woodchips. No compost, no toppings. Plant 1.

Another in the garden bed that has been nourished with compost, mulch, and all other pamperings. Plant 2.

I have photographed both at the same distance to camera so you know the difference in leaf size. Plant 1 is full of flowers. Plant 2 is full of big leaves and hardly one flower.

Lesson: Ferlize carefully. Don’t overdo it. You will end up with lot of large leaves and no produce.
