My neighbor is a rose plant expert. Her advice about trimming is this:
Rose plants go dormant in winter. When you see little pink tips on the branches, that means they have broken their dormancy. That is the time to trim.
Roses break dormancy early Jan in Atlanta. Trim before the new leaves break open.
Roses flower only on new growth. Prune down to the last one to one and half feet for plenty of flowers.
Do not add any fertilizer until the leaves have formed and buds begin to appear.
Remove leaf litter and mulch and allow the plant fresh air and good air circulation at the base.
Hope this helps! Happy to hear your comments based on your experience.
