Growing Carrots: Notes. Part 2. Practicals.
1. Ear mark your carrot bed which will have carrots, leeks, onions and mustard. One row of each. Intercropped. You will add all these plants as the carrots germinate and you take down other crops.
2. This bed will be fully sown by end October. Right now it can have whatever plants you are growing in summer. Just begin at one row of carrots. Add one row each week leaving space for other intercrops.
3. In a well lit spot not shaded by any plant (that plot where you pulled the zucchini out is perfect) make sure the soil is soft and fluffy. Add compost, leaf mulch and manure to the soil. Add some lime.
4. Mark a row with the tip of a Pencil. Sprinkle a row of carrot seeds into the pit you made.
5. Water thoroughly. Gently cover with soil. Only a mild sprinkle.
6. Place a board, wood or cardboard, or a white dupatta, or an old sheet, or anything to cover the place you sowed carrots. This is to keep it from drying. Without this step there will likely be no germination.
7. Every day, morning and evening, remove the board gently. Spritz water from a spray bottle. Throughly. Twice a day. Every day. Cover again.
8. In 15 days, the plants will germinate. Be watchful. Take off the card board cover the moment you see germination hooks.
Rest of the lessons later. But draw they lines in your yard, and sow the seeds. Every week from tomorrow.
If the row is covered in any manner by any shade, no germination. Don’t sow in the middle of an existing patch. Make a clear, nice, open line and sow.
