Snakes can hear the mildest tremor of the earth. They will not come where vibrations are present. They won’t feel safe. Unless the place is also teeming with their food, they won’t take a chance.
If the movement is from prey, they will hunt. They keep your yards safe from pesky critters. They won’t hunt in broad daylight, nor will they come out unless they have lost their way. Or in a rare case if they need to bask in the sun.
Do not be too worried. Earmark your territories well. And in a very large yard, concede. Concede space to wild life since you cannot use all that space. Create urban forests that feed life, and let them be.
Use a small area that you need for your flowers, fruits and vegetables. And work there. Every day. Don’t plant food you will harvest into their zones. Don’t walk into their silent zones and threaten them.
They will all settle down in their spaces and leave you to happily live in your home and garden. Share your living spaces, always. That is true for the smallest garden as it is for a large one.
Do you have trees with berries that feed birds? Do you have large trees that support life? And harvest water? Are there bushes for birds to nest? Design to support them all. Do not cut trees and flatten large pieces of land and grow rows upon rows of stuff, unless you are are a commercial operation. End of essay :)
Large spaces that have remained quiet will have wild animals. Which is why we do zoning.
Large animals will understand territory and will not cross boundaries for their own safety.
Divide your large property into 5 zone. Zone 5 the outmost is your fence. Live fences, large trees, an area you won’t visit. Snakes will go and live there. And protect your property from other predators. That area must be absolutely quiet. No footfall.
Zone 4 is your trees and woods, where you can have large trees and a walking path on the inside edge if you wish. All your tall trees, trees to protect and store rain water, wind shields will come here.
Zone 3 is your fruit garden. After your walking path. You won’t walk outside of that path ever. Zone 4 and 5 are your protectors and for the wild. Zone 3 onwards is for you.
Zone 2 is your perennial garden of bushes, flowers, fruits. Zone 1 is your annual vegetable patch. Zone zero is your house.
You must clear zone 1 and 2 of all the growth, and as you walk around and use it snakes will stop coming there.
A large wooded area needs wild life management techniques and design a vast area in itself to describe here. But this is the gist.
