Tomorrow temps are hitting 89. Some rain is predicted, but tiny transplants will be sad. Keep them covered with milk jugs during the day.
In another week to 10 days, prepare to mulch the beds. Crushed leaves is the next mulch you can get. If you make compost, you would have the sieved material after harvest available to use.
You can use store bought mulch too. Except for wood chips, use nay soft mulch to protect from harsh summer.
The roots will have to remain cool for the plants to thrive. Mulching helps.
If you can’t find mulch, you can also do live mulches and ground covers. Amaranthus, thyme, oregano, sweet potato, melons and ground level gourds are all good live mulches. Sow them now so they grow before heat increases.
Mulching preserves soil moisture and is a must for good soil. Mulch in summer is decomposed by Fall. And makes a soft bed for the winter crops.
