Self sufficient food gardens
by Uma Shashikant
You want to set up a garden that provides food to your family, and offers the range and variety that you desire. You will need a minimum of 60sft per person to get there.
Q: How long does it take to set a garden up?
A: One day. If you make the design and plan in advance and get the materials ready, it takes one day.
Q: How long before the garden begins to yield?
A: One season. If you timed your sowing to the start of the season, by day 35 you will begin harvesting. Most crops will reach peak yield in 90 days.
Q: How long before you make it self sufficient?
A: One year. As you notice the seasons and keep sowing, you know what can be done to achieve a variety of crops. If you grew one bean, you can grow 20 types. It is all the same. By year two you won’t grow 30 bottle gourds, but 12 different types of winter and summer squashes and gourds.
Q: How long before I become an expert?
A: Two years. The first year will go in observing and learning. The second year will be experimentation. By year three, you know enough to be incharge.
That is the summary of setting up and nurturing a self sufficient garden that can feed your family. Go for it.
