Seedlings need light soon as they have germinated. That green hook you see, from that point.
They have the intelligence to know if there is another place with better light, compared to where they are.
Despite all the theory online, window sill is a bad idea for seeds for this reason. They know there is better light outside. They will grow lanky legs and turn towards the light.
At seedling stage a lot of energy is lost doing this. You want them to sprout leaves instead.
There are only two solutions. You have light, right above their heads. Available soon as they germinate, and bright and bold that they don’t search for light.
Two, you grow in a green house with diffused light. The translucent light is present all around the plant and it is happy. Wintersowing is a mini greenhouse technique.
Without light, seedlings invariably fail. Germination is a many step process. At stage one when seeds wake up from hibernation, moisture matters most. At stage two when they send out roots, temperature matters most. At stage three, when they send shoots, light matters most. When first leaves form, ensuring air circulation matters most. They will get infected with fungus, and roots can weaken. When they are tiny plants, protecting from bugs matters most.
Growing from seeds requires managing all these different aspects for 4-6 weeks.
