Many of us here planted potatoes early March. It is a 10 week crop. By end May it should be ready. I harvest sometime mid June. I wait for the leaves to yellow and wilt.
The plants have begun to flower. That is an indication that tubers have begun to form.
I don’t hill the potatoes. It took too much effort and too much soil. I follow Charles Dowdings method. Sow deeply in prepared soil and top up when blooms form.
So today we added a layer of soil and compost to support the large plants and also protect the tubers that will form.
According to Dowding, you add some soil and compost that this stage to prevent the tubers from being exposed to the sun. They turn green on exposure and those tubers are toxic to eat.
