Quick learning points for others who are keen:
1. The lawn need not be dug. Smother the grass completely with cardboard before topping with soil.
2. Allow 2.5 to 3 feet space all around the beds. For access, for air, for utilizing the edges of the bed, and for generating soil for top up.
3. Cover those paths with woodchips. 4 to 6 inch thick. Without that grass will grow right into your beds and you will struggle to remove it.
4. The woodchips will feed water to the beds through plumes that send rain water around. And the soil below them will turn dark and moist.
5. No woodchips on the bed. Simply soil and compost. Love plants is the key to great soil. Sow away.
6. Beds have to run north to south so plants don’t shade one another. Not over 4 feet wide as you don’t want to stamp the grow area.
7. Each bed will have a mixed crop of leaves, herbs, flowers and fruiting plants. Mixed sowing keeps pests off.
No need to dig, turn, or till. I have helped convert so many such backyard lawns to food gardens and continue to help them remotely now. Get started and I am happy to help!
