Planting Onions:
1. If you missed sowing in the Fall, you can still get a harvest in August/September if you sowed onion sets now.
2. Buy packs of tiny onions (called sets). These are seeds sown last summer and harvested in fall as tiny bulbs.
3. Sow them about an inch into the soil. They need no fertilizing now. Add compost after last frost date.
4. Make sure you separate those you want to harvest for greens from those you want to grow for bulbs. Sow tiny ones for bulb and bigger ones for greens.
5. Do not let them flower. Pinch off early if you see a budding shoot.
6. I don’t sow a bed of onions but scatter them about in the yard. They are excellent pest repellents.
7. Beans do not like onions. Carrots love them. Refer companion plant charts for pairing.
8. Every leaf above is a layer of onion below. Don’t clip or cut leaves of the plant grown for bulbs.
9. Onions do not need too much water. Spring rains are adequate.
10. Buy varieties that like acidic soil - Ebenezer, Karmen. Sets in a bag of 80 are selling for $2.15 at TSC.
