Tomorrow is the equinox. Start of spring. Ideally you should be sun mapping your yard tomorrow. But looks like a cloudy day.
How to sun map?
1. Begin at sun rise. Walk around your yard and see which portions are sunny, which are shady. Sunny means sun must shine in that spot. All else is shade.
2. Based on what you see, mentally mark your yard into grow areas. Number them.
3. Make a chart to mark the sun or shade every two hours for all the areas.
4. Peep out every 2 hours and mark all day until sun set.
5. End of the day add up and figure which parts of your garden gets at least 6 hours of sun. Those are your productive areas.
6. What you sow where will depend on the sun map. Do this exercise once, and know how productive your yard can be.
Plants are photosynthesis machines. Without sun nothing happens. Don’t be carried away by lists of plants that grow in shade. Grown up herbs and leaves will survive in shade. No other food giving plant will grow in shade.
