Compost Tea for Seedlings:
As the tiny seedlings in the tray are growing, it is a good idea to nourish them with compost tea.
1. Compost tea is a beneficial drink that strengthens the roots and helps foliage growth in plants. Specially helpful to seedlings.
2. Compost tea is made by brewing a handful of Vermicompost for 1-2 days. The idea is to multiply the beneficial organisms by introducing food and air.
3. In a 5 gallon bucket, add 2-3 gallons of water. Add a handful of Vermicompost. VC is better than normal compost as it is very rich in quality. Simple compost can also be used. Use twice the quantity of VC. You can tie up the compost in an old sock to keep the water clear.
4. Add a handful of jaggery or brown sugar. A few teaspoons of carb - I add besan.
5. Set up a simple fish tank aerator stone (order on amazon or buy from a pet store. $15) and dip into the water. Without constant aeration the tea won’t brew as desired.
6. On day three dilute the tea 1:1 and apply to the seedlings.
Yes, if you don’t want to go the entire 9 yards, you can mix compost in a bucket of water and pour on the seedlings! Compost tea is wonderful science with greater benefits. Take your pick!
