Karma Points
Karma Points
Scribendi has a system to reward our freelance editors for their hard work and determination; this same system also discourages a few things we'd rather not see happen.
Pick up and complete an urgent (pink) task: +7
Pick up and complete a late-running (fuchsia) task: +15
Repeat order from customer: +2
If your work is good enough that a customer comes back to us again, you get credit for it, even if you don't happen to be available when the next order is placed and regardless of whether you are specifically requested for the next order. In other words, if the customer becomes or remains a repeat customer thanks to your work, you get credit even if you don't complete their subsequent order.
From time to time, Scribendi will offer bonus karma points for picking up late-running or difficult orders. These karma bonuses are added by the duty editors, and a green bonus karma box will appear on the order and indicate the number of karma points to be earned by completing this order. Once you have completed and returned the order, the bonus karma is automatically applied to your account.
Also, if you refer a potential remote editor candidate to Scribendi, please send an email to freelance@scribendi.com to let us know. If that person is subsequently hired, we'll reward you with 100 bonus karma points!
Order held too long: -25
The Scribendi policy is that it's okay to temporarily accept a task to evaluate whether you want to do it and then reject it, but you shouldn't hang on to an order for a significant chunk of the deadline and then reject it. The rationale is that rejecting an order after holding it for a long time isn't fair to the next editor, as it reduces their available time to complete the job. It could also make the order late to the client, and it can play havoc with our resource planning and scheduling. Based on this, you have 20 minutes to review the document and subsequently reject it before incurring the karma penalty.
Missed editor deadline: -25
If you fail to return a document by the stated deadline, you will lose 25 karma points. This deduction does not apply to tasks that were already fuchsia or pink when you picked them up, only to blue orders.
Please also note that if you leave Scribendi's roster, any remaining karma points are zeroed out.
Karma points are also awarded based on feedback given to editors by customers.
The list below outlines the karma point values of each rating.
1-star feedback: 0
2-star feedback: 0
3-star feedback: 0
4-star feedback: 5
5-star feedback: 10
Note: Client feedbacks are manually moderated. This is being done to make sure editors aren't given low scores in a client feedback for a reason that has nothing to do with editorial quality.
On the Control Panel, click the Karma Points Earned total for the month. Alternatively, go to the Editor's Log tab and scroll down.
Karma points can be redeemed for any of the rewards listed on our web site. Please consult your local tax authority as to how you need to account for such items in your annual returns.

You may select one of the retailers from our list, or you may select "Other". In this case, please identify the retailer you would like in empty field that appears.
Hit “Request Reward.”
Please note that karma requests are processed on a weekly basis. E-gift cards are typically received within minutes of processing the request. You will receive a confirmation email from freelance@scribendi.com when your karma has been processed.
Please see the list of preferred retailers found below. Exceptions are as follows:
If you have ordered from a specific retailer not on this list in the past without problems, you may continue to do so.
If the retailers listed are not applicable to your specific region or you wish to choose a retailer not on our preferred list, please ensure that the chosen retailer will accept a Canadian billing address and offers e-gift cards before making a karma request.
If you’re requesting a retailer that operates in a currency other than USD, please ensure the retailer allows custom denominations rather than only fixed amounts. When purchasing in another currency, the redemption amount will be converted and may not align exactly with the retailer’s preset denominations.
