Client Instructions and Client Requests
Client Instructions and Client Requests
Double-check the client instructions before starting work to make sure you're doing what the client has asked for and what the service standards require. If you encounter any anomalies (a mismatch between instructions and service chosen, for example), this needs to be reported to Customer Support. This is one of your responsibilities as a freelance editor. You have up to 20 minutes to review an order and subsequently reject it without incurring a karma deduction for holding an order too long.
Clients can specifically request your services by placing your EM code in a special field on the order form. Sometimes they forget and mention your code in the client notes area instead. It's a good idea to scan the order list periodically to see if you have been requested this way. If a client has remembered to put your code in the right place, you will receive an e-mail notification that a client has specifically requested you. The order will be visible to you, and only you, for approximately ¼ of the editor deadline of the order. If you do not pick it up in this time, or if you actively reject the order, it becomes visible to all other editors who are tagged to pick up assignments in this service category.
It's important to note that you are not required to take an order that you are requested for. If, for whatever reason, you cannot or would prefer not to take an order, please reject the order, and notify Customer Support. This way, other editors can take a crack at it.
If you see that a client has requested a particular editor in the client notes and you notice that some time has gone by or the order is approaching its deadline (light pink color), you can contact Customer Support to see if the order is available. We tell clients up front that we cannot guarantee they will get the editor of their choice (after all, editors may be swamped with other work, sick, etc.), but we try to connect authors with preferred editors as much as possible. If the client has explicitly stated that he or she wants only one particular editor or is willing to wait for the editor of their choice (e.g., by stating they want "EMXXX Only" or "I am willing to wait for EMXXX"), please inform Customer Support so that they know the request exists. If the order were to become available to other editors on the board, Customer Support will leave an explicit note to this effect in the Instructions section. Please remember that if an order has a note like "EMXXX Only," please do not pick it up unless you are the requested editor. If you are in any doubt about an instruction, please contact Customer Support, which is always a good fallback option.
