Kimberly Taylor
Customer Experience Manager
How long have you been with Scribendi and what are your primary responsibilities at the company?
It’s a long story – in 2017, I began work at Scribendi as a Customer Relationship Specialist. In 2018, I transitioned into being an in-house editor, and from 2019-2021 I was a freelance editor. In 2022, I came back in-house as the Customer Experience Manager! Aside from managing the Customer Service team, I also work closely with the Marketing team, as well as with clients, to help deliver a memorable and positive overall customer experience.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your path to Scribendi?
I completed graduate school in 2017 in the Greater Toronto Area, and my husband and I were looking to move somewhere more affordable where we could both find work in our respective fields. I grew up in Chatham, so when I saw an opportunity to apply to Scribendi, I thought it was a great chance to immerse myself in a community of like-minded academics who enjoyed reading and coffee. I have worn many hats in the company, but I especially love the people on my team who I get the pleasure of working with every day.
When you sign off from work for the day, what are you passionate about?
I have two small children, a large black lab, and two orange kittens who also think they are dogs. I enjoy camping, hiking, gardening, baking, art galleries, and oil painting.
Can you offer a few words for Scribendi’s editors?
My motto is that a little bit of kindness goes a long way!
Osama Hamzeh
IT Manager
How long have you been with Scribendi and what are your primary responsibilities at the company?
In July 2022, I joined Scribendi as a Senior System Administrator and subsequently earned a promotion to the role of IT Manager. My key responsibilities encompass the management of IT systems, cloud services, infrastructure, and security.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your path to Scribendi?
I hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science with a specialization in Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition. Over the last 25 years, my career in the IT field has spanned various organizations, including roles in universities, financial institutions, healthcare, and (currently) editing and proofreading.
When you sign off from work for the day, what are you passionate about?
I am deeply passionate about my family and prioritize my mental well-being. To nurture these aspects, I always try to bring my family together around the lunch table to catch up on our daily activities. Moreover, I ensure to dedicate time to one of my favorite hobbies, with table tennis holding a special place in my heart.
Can you offer a few words for Scribendi’s editors?
I feel privileged to work with such skilled editors. Drawing on my IT background, I strongly encourage each of you to dig deeper into IT knowledge to shield yourselves from the constant barrage of attacks, be it through phishing emails, deceptive phone calls, or other means. Keep in mind that we're always here to provide support and address any questions you might have.
Meghan Vanderzwart
HR Coordinator (and Freelance Support)
How long have you been with Scribendi and what are your primary responsibilities at the company?
I’ve been with Scribendi for just under 2 years (in February). My primary role for Scribendi is as HR Coordinator (formerly HR Assistant), so I handle most of the daily HR tasks, such as recruitment, employee onboarding and offboarding, maintaining personnel and attendance records, assisting in performance management, benefits administration … and more. I also ‘moonlight’ as the Freelance Support function. This largely entails answering queries that are sent to the Freelance Support inbox (or forwarding to the appropriate party), updating and maintaining freelance contracts, processing karma requests, and freelance recruitment.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your path to Scribendi?
I did my undergraduate degree in English Language and Literature at the University of Windsor, and I did a post graduate certificate in Human Resources Management at St. Clair College. The HR Assistant posting with Scribendi came at a great time in my life, as I was looking to get out of a not-so-great work environment. I felt it was exactly the kind of role I was looking for and the company sounded really interesting. I have always had an interest in the writing and editing worlds. From here, the rest is history! I’m honored to have been able to join the Scribendi team, and I haven’t looked back since being hired. This is a great opportunity to begin building a career in HR, as I recently obtained my CHRP designation through the Human Resources Professional Association and transitioned into my role as coordinator, and I’m excited to see what else lies ahead with Scribendi.
When you sign off from work for the day, what are you passionate about?
I’m a pretty plain person, so when I sign off from work, you will likely find me outside (relaxing, hiking, boating, swimming, you name it), reading a book, or binge-watching tv. Though, for the next 10 months, you’ll also find me doing some serious wedding planning!
Can you offer a few words for Scribendi’s editors?
Even though I’ve never met most of you in person, you are more than just your EM code! I appreciate getting to know everyone a little better every time I interact with our freelance network.
Spencer Moyes
In-house Editor and Quality Team Lead
How long have you been with Scribendi and what are your primary responsibilities at the company?
I’ve been at Scribendi for two years and three months. In addition to editing in-house and external documents, I monitor the Quality Department inbox and respond to quality assessment (QA) appeals. Recently, I’ve been contributing to Scribendi’s AI development by identifying errors in archived sentences.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your path to Scribendi?
I grew up in Victoria, British Columbia, on Canada’s west coast. During my twenties, I taught English in Mexico, Spain, and Japan. My best experience while living abroad was hiking Camino de Santiago medieval pilgrimage routes during summer vacations in Spain. When I returned to Canada, I completed a PhD in Spanish literature, which overlapped with my position at Scribendi—my first day as an editor came two weeks before my dissertation defense.
When you sign off from work for the day, what are you passionate about?
I’m a soccer fan. I once played, refereed, and coached soccer, but nowadays I’m primarily a spectator. Canada’s men’s team has had some (uncharacteristic) success in recent years, and I hope to see them play when they cohost the 2026 World Cup.
Can you offer a few words for Scribendi’s editors?
Unfortunately, you will probably communicate with me only under unpleasant circumstances—namely, when QA rulings seem unjust and, in some cases, have resulted in a request for a redo or a status demotion. Rest assured that my goal is to reach the fairest outcome possible by reversing all incorrect QA decisions. The most effective way to help me see that QA decisions are incorrect is to cite dictionaries and style guides (The Chicago Manual of Style is Scribendi’s default style guide for grammar and usage).
Erin Ward
Editorial Manager
How long have you been with Scribendi and what are your primary responsibilities at the company?
I have been working with Scribendi on and off in some capacity since 2014. I have been in my current role as Editorial Manager since May, 2023. I primarily work with management and the in-house team to ensure that the day-to-day editorial processes are running smoothly. I also provide support to the Quality Department and generate regular reports on editorial data that is relevant to the in-house editors and to the company.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your path to Scribendi?
When I began working with Scribendi as a freelance editor in 2014, I had an undergraduate degree in philosophy from Western University and I had written for some local publications and organizations, like WindsoriteDOTca, Juniper Books, and the Windsor Printmaker’s Forum. I have always had a love of the written word, and at that time I was heavily invested in cultivating my writing abilities. I came to Scribendi with a robust knowledge of grammar concepts (courtesy of my grammar-fanatic mother) and some experience editing my own work. I then did a masters in philosophy at the University of Windsor and a masters in journalism at the University of British Columbia before returning to Windsor to start a PhD in Argumentation Studies. While enrolled in this program, I began editing for a couple of academic journals, Informal Logic and the Journal of Teaching and Learning, based at the University. I then returned to Scribendi as an in-house editor in July, 2020, and continued in that role until I went on maternity leave to have my daughter, Luna. Shortly after my maternity leave, I returned to Scribendi as the Editorial Manager.
When you sign off from work for the day, what are you passionate about?
As a life-long student, I continue to read philosophy and find obscure books that activate my sense of wonder. It’s really that sense of wonder that drives me in a lot of my pursuits. I have also continued to work on my own independent writing projects, and one day I will get over my need for perfection and actually attempt to release them to the world in some way. I spend as much time as I can in nature and love to hike and explore conservation areas and national parks. When I need to relax, that’s where I go. My focus right now, however, is mainly on my family and my two-year-old daughter, Luna. It has been an incredible (and exhausting!) journey so far watching her grow and learn, and I am constantly amazed by her.
Can you offer a few words for Scribendi’s editors?
Editing requires such mental fortitude. Many editors routinely have to face and overcome feelings of doubt and an anxiety-driven need for perfection; they have to self-motivate to reach tight deadlines with quality work, often working in isolation; and they have to have a deep knowledge of the language and its structural underpinnings. But it can just be so rewarding to utterly transform a piece of writing and to have the expertise and ability to engage with the language at a depth that most people will never glimpse. Given the extremely low rate of acceptance for freelance editors at this company, Scribendi editors have proven themselves to be at the very top of the editing hierarchy in terms of skill, and I think that’s really something to be proud of.
Kris Hill
Senior Manager - Marketing Operations
How long have you been with Scribendi and what are your responsibilities at the company?
I have been with Scribendi since August 29th, 2022. My primary responsibilities are managing projects and people in the marketing department, analyzing the results of campaigns and changes made to drive business, and working with outside partners to improve our site’s SEO and PPC results.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your path to Scribendi?
I’m a nerd, and I’m curious. These qualities have led me to investigate the why and how of almost everything I encounter. As a kid I thought that meant that I’d be a detective or private investigator (I even have a degree in criminology and my PI license), but these qualities actually ended up driving me into data analysis and project management for many different companies across multiple industries. I started out working for the Neilsen Media Group, then the Minto Group Real Estate, then Cision PR and Newswire, then Shopify, and finally Scribendi.
When you sign off from work for the day, what are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about games. I play a lot of TTRPGs, I LARP once a month, I love board games and video games, and I play through logic puzzle workbooks on the regular. While working for Neilsen and for Minto, I owned and operated a LAN gaming café, but as online multi-player modes became common enough that people didn’t need to come out to the café to play together, the business was not sustainable. I’ve been playing Dungeons & Dragons since I was 10 years old, but my love of D&D began in earnest with the release of the 3rd Edition, and I’ve LARPed in a Vampire the Masquerade game consistently for over 20 years. I’m currently one of the storytellers for an Ottawa Vampire the Masquerade game with more than 60 active players.
Can you offer a few words for Scribendi’s editors?
Thank you for all you do. Without your hard work, expertise, and dedication, what I do for Scribendi would not be possible. You’re the key to this business because you provide the service we are all trying to support.
