Examples of Editor Feedback
To get you started, here's an example of quality editor feedback. However, there are so many ways to provide feedback that we don't want you to feel like you have to use this as a template. Each order will place different demands on you as an editor in terms of the feedback that is necessary. If you edit a relatively short document (less than 1,000 words), you may not need to say very much more than this:
Thank you for the opportunity to work on your document. If you are having any technical issues with the changes I've made or have any other questions, please see the Scribendi FAQs page at https://www.scribendi.com/faq/technical.en.html, or contact Customer Service. If you wish to request me for a future order, you can do this during the order process after uploading your document. There is a text box at the bottom of the order page that says "Editor Code (Optional)". Just type my editor code, XXXX, in this space. When you place your order, the system will automatically send your request to me.
Thank you for choosing Scribendi. Good luck!
Now, we realize that not all orders are short and not all orders require only a few changes. If they were all short, and if they did only require a few small changes, we probably wouldn't be in business! Here is an example of extensive editor feedback on a particularly difficult order.
Hello, and thank you for coming to Scribendi for your editing needs.
While editing your document, I focused on word choice/order, subject-verb agreement, tense, consistency, and sentence structure, making corrections and/or comments as necessary. Please pay special attention to your references (footnotes) as many of them are incomplete or contain errors. Please carefully review each reference and ensure that it is complete.
As requested, I edited your order in British English. Also as requested, I edited your order according to Chicago guidelines. I made some formatting changes to give your document internal consistency and to make it look more professional. These formatting changes include setting the font to a consistent 12-point Times New Roman, setting the margins at 1 inch all around, and ensuring the line spacing was consistent. After revising this document, please carefully review the formatting requirements for the document to ensure it adheres fully to Chicago guidelines.
If you are having any technical issues with the changes I've made or have any other questions, please see the Scribendi FAQs page at https://www.scribendi.com/faq/technical.en.html or contact Customer Service.
Because of the extensive edits required for this order, and because the paper is not yet complete, I recommend that you return to Scribendi for a proofread of your final draft and possibly even for a second edit. If you wish to request me for a future order, you can do this during the order process after uploading your document. There is a text box at the bottom of the order page that says "Editor Code (Optional)". Just type my editor code, XXXX, in this space. When you place your order, the system will automatically send your request to me.
Thank you again for using Scribendi!
As you can see, the editor has explained the specific grammatical components he or she focused on while editing, and he or she also encouraged the client to return for a "cleanup" of the document after it has been revised (and added an EM code to increase the likelihood of getting a return customer).
We don't want our editors to provide "canned" responses to clients, but having a general list of items you cover in your client notes is a great idea, and it will ensure you provide consistent, high-quality notes.
