Hand-Colored Recreation

Inspired by:

Rubber Ring in a Swimming Pool (1971) by David Hockney

This is a photograph inspired by a David Hockney painting. I took this image in a little pond outside my house. I took the image with my digital camera and then I downloaded it, inverted it and made a transparency negative. I then printed it in the dark room using the enlarger and chemicals. In this image the balloons make a triangle, I added color using watercolor and you can see the texture of the rocks. There is contrast between the light blue water and the bright red balloon triangle.

In this image there is rule of thirds because the balloon triangle only takes up part of the frame. There is informal balance with the water and the rocky shore. The picture is in sharp focus. The balloons are grouped and the rocks are grouped. The reflection of the tree branches serves as leading lines. The rocks frame the pond. This picture was originally in color, I turned it black and white, inverted it using photoshop, went through the process of making test strips and then the final print and then used paint to hand tint the print. The developer was new so my picture developed quickly.

For this image I ran around my house trying to find something I use as the red life tube and I found three red balloons which I blew up, tied together. This picture relates to my life because I chose the painting and how I wanted to recreate it and then I hand tinted it. I wish the red tint and the blue tint were the same opacity. I had to use a different paint for the red because there was no red paint like the blue. The print itself is strong and has a wide range of value and clean borders.
