Positive & Negative Space

The subject of these images is a tree down by Mast Landing. I took these images on a day that wasn't super sunny, but the sky was clear and bright. To take this image I used my digital camera. When I was driving past I liked this tree and how wild the branches are. There are defined lines, different values of blue in the sky and there is positive and negative space. There is contrast between the thick trunk and the thin branches. There is unity because all of the small branches lead back to the trunk.

In the first image there is formal balance, but in the second one there is informal balance because of where the tree is in each. There is silhouette lighting in both. There is sharp focus for both because I didn't focus on something specific. There is leading lines as the branches lead out and also in to the trunk. There is grouping because the small branches are all grouped together. Originally you could see the tree's texture in the images, but using photos I increased the black point and saturation so the tree became a true silhouette and I kept the blue of the sky.

These images remind me of winter because during winter the trees are bare, for the most part, and the sky is fairly grey. These pictures relate to my life because I chose what angle to take them at and I chose how to edit them. I think these images could be stronger if the tree was a little less centered to make them more interesting. To do this I would have to retake the pictures. I could also take more pictures when the sky is bluer or the sun is rising or setting to add color.
