Film: Holiday Themed

The subject of this image is two reindeer candle holders that my family uses during the holidays. They are in front of a small mirror and the reflection is in focus. I used my Pentax K1000 film camera to take this picture. It was on the same roll as my repetition pictures. I processed the film in the dark room, cut up the film into segments of five and sleeved them. I took the sleeved negatives and made a segmented test strip for my contact print. To do this I used the enlarger, paper and print chemicals in the dark room. Once I had the right amount of time I made a full sheet contact print and picked a picture to enlarge. When I enlarged this picture I went through the same process with the contact print and I used the mini microscope with a mirror to focus the image. I chose to take this picture because the christmas them is subtle, it is in the reflection because the actual reindeer are out of focus. There is some value in this picture because of the light that's in the mirror.

In this image there is formal balance in the reflection because you can see the same amount of each reindeer on each side. The reflections are silhouettes because of the darkness of the image. Selective focus is utilized where the reindeer are out of focus in the foreground, but in the reflection they are in focus. While making my final enlarged print for this picture I had to try different times, aperture and the developer was very slow so I had to leave it in for longer. I went back and forth between being too light and out of focus and being too dark and not having much range in value.

The story of this image i that these candle holders are in my dining room during the holiday season so they remind me of christmas. The meaning is to show that it was the holiday season when I took this picture. The image relates to my life because I took the picture in my house, it was my original image I wasn't inspired by anyone else. A few things that bother me in this image are the uneven border and that it's a very dark image even though there are two images on the opposite wall. To fix the border I would need to make another print of the image and be careful when I'm setting up the paper under the enlarger. Because I would be doing this a different day from when I did my first one I would need to start the process over because the chemicals change. I would need to make a new segmented test strip and then go off of that. This might also help me get a lighter print with more range of value. A problem that I faced during this project was that film didn't advance after the first few pictures so I didn't have any good holiday themed pictures. Luckily my repetition roll had some holiday related images that I could use. I don't know what happened with my camera because it advanced for the first 2 1/2 pictures and then stopped and it wasn't ripped, I took a roll after it for a different project and all the film advanced so it wasn't the battery. However at the 24th picture in that roll my shutter got stuck, my camera is old so it has problems sometimes.
