The subject of this image is the sun setting through some trees over water. The sun is magnified. I took this image across the Cousin's Island bridge. I took this image using my digital camera and to get the magnified look I used my camera's telephoto lens and I held it with one of my hands. I wanted to incorporate bright, colorful lighting so I waited for the sun to set. In this image there are lines from the trees, there's color from the sun, movement is shown as the sun is going down, contrast between the blue-grey sky and the orange-red of the sun in the lens.
In this image there is rule of thirds because the lens is off center, informal balance because there's the sun and lens on one side and the open sky on the other side. There is selective focus because the sun inside the lens isn't really in focus, but everything around it is. There are leading lines because the tree branches point towards the lens and the two trees frame the lens with the sun. There is a low horizon line because I was up high looking down. After I took this picture I used photos on my laptop to adjust the saturation and lighting.
To take this image I had my mom drive me to Cousin's Island after practice. I wanted to magnify the sun because it gives me hope that spring will come eventually. This project relates to my life because I chose how to use magnification to capture a scene. I think this image could be stronger if my hand wasn't in it. To avoid this I would have someone else hold it from below while I was taking the picture.
